Long time back ...

... when i started with my pre-reqs for masters in CS, i should have read this. Atleast, I would have thought of doing something else rather than trying to find out right now why i'm still in IT.

I wouldn't worry too much about what Joel says on Java programmers (although I regularly follow JoelOnSoftware.com and have never programmed or ever had the desire to program in Java.

What Joel says is from point of view of hackers. The bulk of the programmers do what hackers dislike like C++, Java, Oracle, SQL Server.

Yes, C and Assembly Language are great tools...but its tougher to do many other things in them. For eg. Can you imagine a simple 'Hello World' program in Assembly Language? Or developing a ERP application in C? As apps get bigger and more complicated, programmers will prefer to work with languages which don't bother them too much like with memory management etc.

Programming in C or Assembly Language is a nice exercise for the brain, but if you just C or Assembly all the time you may not be able to make bigger stuff.
