Standing for National Anthem

Vidhu Vinod Chopra asked his viewers, to stand up for the National Anthem. Most of the compere's ask their audience to do the same. Why? Won't the people natuarally stand up when the Anthem is rendered ? Around 15th Aug 2002, Hindu carried an article about how the Laloo couple was sitting during the I-Day parade while the Anthem was rendered. And since then, everyyear the news item does its rounds. And each year, a whole debate goes on, how is it possible for an MP to do such an act of national disrespect.

This question is asked as if each individual in this country, does stand up naturally. How many of us, stand up when we hear the Anthem rendered in TV/Radio ? I dont think, a lot of us do this act. It has to come naturally. Its not that if we dont stand, it means that we dont respect it. Its just that we are lazy to do it. We feel really lazy to do a lot of stuff. We are lazy to go to the flag hoisting ceremony conducted early in the morning at our school/company/where-ever on a holiday. Even if we go to the ceremony, we are so lazy that we cant stop yawning.

Going away from the topic, its crazy to hear people cribbing about how India can get only 1 or 2 medals in the olympics. But when it comes to sending their own kids to take part in sports activities, or allowing them to become professional sports person, they will think n number of times and say NO. Yes, for sure the decision will be a right one for their kid, and for sure, the kid would go on to finish his studies and go on to become one more kid helping out the american clients. But the kid wont in any way increase our olympic medals tally.

There was an editorial in IE stating that how, upper caste people think that any professional that involves physical activity is considered lower to their standards. Does the thinking still exists ?

At a get-together I attended recently,I was shocked when lots of people sang the national anthem wrongly. They just didn't know the correct lyrics. But then how patriotic are we as a whole ? The only way out is to instill a self-pride in being Indian. And the self-pride will develop only if we learn to respect ourselves.

There was actually a poster announcing a debate on whether the national anthem shud be sung or not before the screening of the weekly movies at the Indian Institute of Science in bangalore...
If this is how students are going to 'think' and 'debate' and no brainer problem such as this...I think we can expect to find a lot more people sitting during the National Anthem....

Arun,

Not surprising to know about the incident, yes very true that we need to respect ourselves to respect our country

If the debate is regarding whether we should play the anthem or not, then I think its a debatable topic. If its regarding whether we should stand up or not, then its outrageous.
