Whats there in a name ?

My name is Srihari and spelt S.R.I.H.A.R.I, and why is that when somebody is writing my name from the Identiy card that i produce which has my name spelled correctly, write it as S.H.R.I.H.A.R.I ?

Can't understand why somebody has to use their brain, when all they have to do is reproduce verbatim ?

Non-south Indians feel comfortable adding a few "h" s to south Indian names. My Last name which has just one "h" , when Written by a North Indian suddenly seems longer with three "h" s.

I tend to disagree fren, if you observe south indian names THRY tend to add and extra h to their ts, for example, geetha, sangeetha, jyothi:). This makes the south indian names a lil more confusing.

However I have been facing a similar problem, people with rare names which are similar to the less rare ones, face this problem. Most people first take my name to be Harish. Even in my official accounts, for example my openwave account had a harish:).

Hi guys,

i was not even getting into the north south area, my question was why do people use their brain to analyze a name or anything when all they had to do was reproduce it, for eg when someone is writing my name, their thought process starts to make calculations, as to where im from, what im doing in so and so place, etc etc.

What's in a name? A lot ! A name says a lot about the person's background (if not about his/her character). It's a spontaneous reaction in most people. To begin with, it tells you about the gender - unless of course you have unisex names like Pat or Kiran or as in my case, Nandu.

It also says something about a person's nationality -for eg: Jacques (France) or Lopez (Hispanic),

Religion - Khan/Iyer/Goldberg (Jewish)

In India, it also tells us what language or state a person belongs to - When I hear a name like "Moumita" I know it's a bengali girl, or say a name like Srihari tells me a lot about not only that he is south indian, more so tamilian, and a high chance that he is brahmin.
(To stretch a guess even more maybe vaishnavite).

So it's not wrong to analyze a person's name. To some extent you can guess what you can expect before you meet someone, but ofcourse nothing to base an impression about.

Most of this knowledge comes from meeting people from different parts of the world. To begin with 4 years ago, I could never guess how people could tell someone is Italian/German/Iranian. But it's a fun thing to do when you see a name. To some extent, I can now guess if a person is white/black too (names like Latoya are give-aways) :)

Btw hari, you have a nice name !

Hi Indica,

First off thanks for your compliments.
Yes names do mean a lot, as u said it speaks a lot about the person.
But the whole point in my blog was, why would you go to all the depths, when all you have to do is reproduce a name letter by letter and then forget about the name you worte ?
Does it go with the Indian psyche to brood over anybody they come across, and start concocting stories about that person ?

Indica dear, Just one observation, Nandu doesnt sound to me as a unisex name.

Its certainly anytime a masculine name:).

It very well maybe. I've grown so used to it, I've always felt it unisex :-)
But names like Nandita or Nandini (as in my case) are abbreviated to Nandu.

Hi Hari,

You have a very good blog layout out here. It looks very neat and cool.

Is it one of the new blog layouts given by blogger or is it your own handicraft.

And thanks for commenting in my page.
